IEBC Official Charged After Changing Uhuru's Results

IEBC officials compile data on August 11, 2017 at the Bomas of Kenya before presidential results were announced.
An Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official has been charged with altering the presidential results of the October 26 election.

Kandara presiding officer Peter Kirugu Kamande was charged with altering the presidential votes at the Kirii polling centre at Murang'a County.

Kamande is alleged to have changed over 400 votes from President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and awarded them to independent candidate Kavinga Kaluyu.

Kandara Senior Resident Magistrate Manuela Kinyanjui later referred Kamande's matter to the Murang’a Principal Magistrate's Court, which has been gazetted to handle electoral matters.

Kandara Constituency has been in the limelight since last week after an altercation between area MP Alice Wahome and returning officer Martin Malonza.

The Kandara MP was caught on camera harassing Malonza at Ng’araria Girls Secondary School, demanding to sign Form 34B as Jubilee Party’s chief agent in the area.

Malonza said the MP roughed him up and blocked him from leaving just a few meters from the center.

However, the legislator denied there was commotion, saying she merely wanted to verify the results of Jubilee's candidate Uhuru Kenyatta.

Already, the IEBC has called for Wahome to be prosecuted for committing an electoral offence and intimidation of election officials.

Director of Public Prosecutions Dr Keriako Tobiko asked the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to investigate the Jubilee legislator.

On Monday the police summoned Wahome for questioning over the incident.

However, on Tuesday, Murang’a CID boss Julius Rutere said police had yet to complete their investigations.

He disclosed Wahome had recorded a statement to facilitate investigations being spearheaded by the Murang’a South criminal investigations office.
