Man Dies After Bar Brawl Over NASA-Jubilee Argument

A bar brawl sparked by a political argument between a Jubilee and a Nasa supporter ended tragically following the death of a teacher.

The deceased, a primary school teacher in Gilgil, was hit on the head with a blunt object and succumbed to the injuries on Wednesday.

He was rushed to the hospital by his wife after he was found bleeding in bed early morning. He died while receiving treatment, a few hours after being admitted to a Nakuru hospital.

“He managed to walk home despite having being hit on the head with a blunt object, but his condition worsened hours later,” said a friend to the deceased.

The man’s attacker was arrested following the incident on Tuesday night at a popular bar at Kikopey trading centre.

An eye-witness, Jane Muthoni said the two had been drinking when an argument arose on the legality of the repeat election.

She said the argument turned into namecalling before the suspect grabbed a piece of wood and hit the teacher.

Another source claimed that the two quarreled over Raila’s decision to withdraw from the October 26 repeat presidential election.

“The Nasa supporter vehemently defended his party’s decision to withdraw, drawing the wrath of Jubilee supporters, who included the teacher, as they were having a drink at a bar in Kikopey area,” said the source.

As tempers flared, the Nasa supporter picked a piece of wood and attempted to attack his rival. He, however, hit the teacher who tried to protect his friend from the blow.

Confirming the incident, Gilgil OCPD Serah Koki said investigations were still ongoing.

“We are yet to establish whether the victim was hit as a result of a political argument. We are still interrogating those who witnessed the incident, including the bar operators,” she said.

“Investigators are in the initial stages of the probe and we shall be able to establish whether the attack occurred as a result of political differences,” she said.
